Case Study 3:

Dealing with piracy at sea.

The number of piracy related incidents around the world continues at an alarming rate. Although often nothing more than involving a minor theft every incident has the potential of being far worse. Many shipping companies now recognise that the solution is not to take chances and place high profile Maritime  Security Officers on board.

The Challenge.

One of Securewest International's long term, loyal clients asked our advice about security for a vessel's upcoming voyage that would enter into known piracy waters.

An assessment was provided to the CSO by Securewest International's own Maritime Assistance Center. Due to the nature of the cargo, mission and location our advice was to deploy a team of  Maritime Gurkha Security Officers on board for the duration of the voyage. The team provided a high visibility, uniformed deterence and when in port were able to provide access control leaving the ship's crew to continue with busy port operations.

The Result.

Within a matter of one hour of anchoring off Chittagong the vessel was attempted to be boarded by knife wielding pirates. The on board security team were immediately all recalled to duty and without drawing a weapon the pirates were forced immediately away from the vessel.

The text of the Captain's email following the incident sums up the effective use of on board security:

Subject: The Gurkas have earned their money

Captain F

I just wanted to let you know that the Gurkas have earned their money already. The vessel has been secure at anchor a little over 1 hour and we have been approached by pirates already. 4 men attempted to gain access at the bow and the Gurkas chased them off  with nothing stolen. I and the crew are now more than ever grateful for their presence here.

Regards

Captain

A Glowing Testimonial.

The Captain of the same vessel had further cause to thank Securewest International for their services later the same year.

The Captain writes (all names have been removed for security reasons):

Subject: RE: 'ship's name removed'

Thanks and I will Pass this on to Sgt. Y. By the way, your men are extraordinary again. The help and services they provided were exceptional. I cannot begin to thank them enough for their assistance and their constant professionalism. Above it all, they have again proven to be some of the kindest and enjoyable people I have met. It has been an honor and a privilege to have them aboard my vessel.Thank you for your services and the quality of people you provide
