St Mary's school, Singla, near Darjeeling is run by Indian Catholic Missionaries. The school is on the North Tukvar Tea Estate, which is about another hours drive on very bad mountain roads north of Darjeeling in a quiet secluded location nestling in the Himalayan foothills.
The school has 250 pupils from 4 years old to 15 years old, and without the school there would be no education in the area for the children who are virtually all sons and daughters of people who work on the tea estates. There are still another 800 in the area that do not receive an education in this very poor part of India.
It was a result of a visit to North Tukvar Tea Estate to see a family friend in 2001 that Securewest International's President John Casson and his wife Jenny made a surprise visit. They were very impressed by the dedication and hard work of the Nuns and their teachers to provide these children with an education, but saddened that they were so short of funds. This led to Securewest International's substantial quarterly sponsorship to the school that has assisted the school in many ways.
If you are interested in knowing more about the school, or interested in offering a donation, you are welcome to contact John Casson directly at info@securewest.com
