Weekly Maritime Incident Summary 20 – 26 January 2026

The Securewest International Maritime Assistance Centre (MAC) recorded 10 maritime-related incidents during the reporting period of 20 – 26 January 2026. The following incidents were recorded:

  • 20-JAN-26 Migrant & Refugee Incident – 29 irregular migrants apprehended off the coast of Izmir, Turkey.
  • 20-JAN-26 General Security Warning – US forces seize sanctioned crude oil tanker MV SAGITTA in the Caribbean.
  • 20-JAN-26 Boarding – Cargo ship LAKE ONTARIO boarded at Luanda Anchorage, Angola.
  • 20-JAN-26 Migrant & Refugee Incident – 29 migrants intercepted by Turkish Coast Guard off the coast of Balıkesir, Turkey.
  • 20-JAN-26 Suspicious Approach – Bulk carrier AFRICAN HHB approached 38nm SE of Lagos, Nigeria.
  • 21-JAN-26 Maritime Information Advisory – Sanctioned Russian-flagged oil products tanker shadowed by Royal Netherlands Navy through the North Sea.
  • 21-JAN-26 Migrant & Refugee Incident – 43 migrants intercepted by Turkish Coast Guard off Izmir.
  • 22-JAN-26 General Security Warning – Russian shadow fleet tanker GRINCH seized in Mediterranean Sea by French Navy.
  • 25-JAN-26 Migrant & Refugee Incident – 50 migrants feared drowned after boat sinks off Tunisia.
  • 25-JAN-26 Migrant & Refugee Incident – 20 migrants rescued off the coast of İzmir, Turkey.
