Course description

The Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) course is the minimum mandatory security training requirement for seafarers who do not have assigned designated security duties on board ships and mobile offshore units where the ISPS Code applies.

This MCA-approved online course has been developed to meet the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended, and provides the knowledge required to recognise security threats, understand maritime security procedures and support the implementation of a Ship Security Plan.

On successful completion, learners will have the knowledge and competence required to contribute to the security of the vessel and comply with internationally recognised maritime security standards.

The certificate issued on successful completion confirms that the holder has met the requirements of: Section A-VI/6, paragraph 4 and Table A-VI/6-1 of the STCW Code. Regulation VI/6, paragraph 1 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended (STCW Convention); and Section A-VI/6, paragraph 4 and Table A-VI/6-1 of the STCW Code.

Course content

  • Introduction to Maritime Security – Gain an understanding of maritime security principles, international legislation and why security awareness is essential within the maritime industry.
  • Key Threats – Learn how to recognise security threats including piracy, terrorism, smuggling, stowaways and other unlawful acts that could affect vessels and crews.
  • Plans, Policies and Procedures – Understand the purpose of the Ship Security Plan, security levels and the procedures used to help protect vessels, personnel and cargo.
  • Communication and Reporting – Develop the knowledge required to identify, report and respond appropriately to security incidents in accordance with onboard procedures.

Certification
