Weekly Maritime Summary 17 – 23 February 2020

The Securewest Global Response Centre (GRC) recorded seven maritime related incidents during the reporting period of 17 – 23 Feb 2020.

Maritime Incidents

  • 18-Feb-20 – Suspicious Approach – at 00:20 UTC, at position 06 17 53 N, 003 14 16 E, approximately 13nm SW of Lagos Anchorage, Three persons in a small boat approached an anchored tanker and attempted to board via the anchor chain
  • 19-Feb-20 – Boarding – at 07:20 LT, the undertow tanker MORBIUS was boarded in position 20 36 24 N, 070 03 57 E, approximately 66 nm S of Porbandar Port in India
  • 20-Feb-20 – Suspicious Approach – at 18:24 UTC an MV reported a suspicious approach in position 13 27 00 N, 049 42 00 E, 86 nm ESE of the Port of Bi’r Ali, Yemen
  • 20-Feb-20 – Attack – at 01:10 UTC, MV was being reported as under attack in position 05 08 31 N 002 06 14 E, approximately 76nm SE of Lome, Togo
  • 21-Feb-20 – Attack – at 03:20 UTC, an MV was attacked by armed men onboard a small boat in position 02 56 00 N, 003 30 00 E, approximately 211 nm S of Lagos, Nigeria
  • 22-Feb-20 – Suspicious Approach – at 07:48 UTC, an MV was approached by 11 skiffs with 4-5 persons on board in position 12 10 00 N, 043 31 18 E, approximately 39nm NE from the Port of Djibouti, Africa

Key:

Suspicious ApproachSuspicious Approach: All other unexplained activity in close proximity by an unknown vessel.
Boarding IncidentBoarding: Unauthorized boarding of a vessel by persons not part of its complement without successfully taking control of the vessel.
Maritime AttackAttack: An incident where weapons are discharged by pirates or pirate paraphernalia such as ladder, grappling hook, make contact with the vessel.
